Broadband: Online Computer Support

A recent issue of Wired Magazine featured a lengthy discussion of this very problem, and chances are good the publication will return to the topic again, because its a serious issue. Many of us have actually learned to troubleshoot a number of computer issues myself simply because it was easier than getting somebody on the phone.
Getting the Computer Support You Need
One option consumers now have is that of private companies that specialize in giving you online computer support. Instead of, or even in addition to, going to the company that sold you the computer, you would have access to specialists who do nothing else. Naturally such services cost a fee, but they are generally pretty inexpensive.
If you are talking about your home computer, whether you need such a service is going to depend on how much you rely on your computer, how technically challenged you are, and the kinds of things you do on your computer. For a company though, even a small office, this is a service that could be a necessity. The nice thing is that some of these support sources can also help with setting up your Intranet, Internet or even VPN support.
I have found that getting help through email is great, but there are some distinct limitations. Often when you have questions, it takes the live exchange between two people in order to really get at the problem. As a result, I still say whatever company you go with, a customer service line with live people is still a must. Providers with online or live chat support are even better.
